The Basic Portuguese FF

This Fast Fortress can be very powerful in team games, and can allow you to field the very powerful army of dragoons and organ guns relatively quickly.  It is not recommended in 1v1 unless you're feelin' risky.

The basic idea is to get 1200 food and 1000 gold very quickly, and then age to fortess and use your three town centers to rapidly inflate your economy, while crippling your opponents with a high tech army.

Required Cards:

Colonial Militia

Improved Buildings

700 gold

2 organ guns

5 dragoons

8 cassadors

Age I:

2 villagers to herd the nearest deer, 5 to food crates.  Spam "V" to get a villager queued.  Explorer uses spyglass and scouts.  When food crates are gone, 1 villager to wood crate to get 100 wood and build a house.  The rest to food from then on.

First card is Colonial Militia

When your population count reads: "14/20" click the age up button to Colonial, aging with the Quartermaster, who gives 400 wood.  During transition, put 4 villagers on gold, but only 2 or 3 are necessary if you get some sweet gold treasures.  Basically, you want 300 gold exactly by the time your 700 gold card has been completely gathered.  Any more gold is a waste of villager seconds at this time.  The rest on food.  Queue up several villagers.

Age II:

When you hit colonial, immediately send 700 gold as your first card.  You should have gathered roughly 300 gold by now, so switch some of your gold gathering villagers to collect the 400 wood, the others go to food.  Set your villager waypoint on wood, or food if you feel you're gonna be short of 1200.

With 400 wood, you could build a number of different building combinations.  If you are under heavy pressure, I would build a barracks and 2 houses.  If you have some room to breathe, maybe a market would be a better idea.

Place your second TC close to your first, preferrably sheltering a gold mine or your hunting.  You want to be able to garrison villagers in both TCs and shoot from both at the same time no matter where your enemy attacks from.

Your third card should be improved buildings if you come under siege, which you probably will.  If you feel you don't need it, then save it for fortress age.

By now you should have 1200 food and 1000 gold.  Age up with either the Exiled Prince for speed, or with the Marksman for 6 cassadors.

Age III:

In the Fortress Age, you start to have options.  From this point on, it is not advisable to follow a strict build order, you need to be able to adapt to whatever your enemies are doing.  Send dragoons, organ guns, muskets, 1000 coin to make organ guns, whatever you want.  Just try to keep constant villager production no matter what.

A word on why the Portuguese FF is peculiar:

A lot of players lose badly when they try the Portuguese FF.  This is because of the nature of the Portuguese civilization.  Portugal is, and will always be, a defensive civilization.  It's best unit, the dragoon, is a counter unit, best placed behind walls and in trees, or utilizing the hit and run technique.  Portugal's skirmisher are glass cannons, a powerful attack but they crumble like dixie cups to anything that gets within punching range.  Same with organ guns.

The standard FF, like a Spanish FF or a French or Dutch FF, is all about getting to fortress and getting out as many veteran and unique units as possible to quickly crush a colonial army.  The Portuguese however, would fail miserably at that.  Cassadors and organ guns get torn to shreds by colonial cavalry, dragoons get destroyed by basically everything except cavaly.  Portugal can't mass organ guns like the Dutch can mass falconets in Fortress, with their super cool banks.  Portugal doesn't have a super OP unit like the Lancer or Cuirassier to mop the floor with colonial infantry.

What does Portugal have?  It has it's Town Centers.  If you can get three of them, producing villagers all at once, you can quickly overtake the British manor boom, the Dutch bank boom, even the Japanese shrine boom.  But it still takes a while.  Therefore it is in your best interest to play defensively.  Putting all three of your town centers close together, with improved buildings and colonial militia, presents a very tough nut to crack.  Add to that organ guns and cassadors wedged in between your houses and town centers, with dragoons for support, and you become virtually impregnable by any colonial army.  Add a fort, and you are free to boom for a long time.

Portugal is a very complex civilization to manage, but it can also be very rewarding to whip out those organ guns and play your foes a crackling song of death and destruction!

nice write up Love!

As most people think ports are a rather defensive civ, I'd like to post a rush with them. It neglects economy for an strong early mass. It's a contain strategy, so don't expect to win at the 7 min mark. You will be trying to harass from 5 min onwards, gradually beating his eco back, while you keep booming from 2 TCs.

The 40 xbow @ 6 min rush:

Cards:

eco theory, 600/700 food and wood crates, 700 gold, 8 xbows, rest is up to you, pretty standard.

Discovery:

• standard discovery: see love. Age up with 11-12 vills with the 400 wood poli, depending on treasures. You want to have a little idle TC time, it makes your age up that little bit faster! Don't send any cards!

Transition Disc-Colo:

• put 3 vills on wood, send 2 vills forward (do the test with building a house, so you can get as close as possible, cover hunts/gold with your forward base), rest on food. Queue 3 vills in your TC.

• put TC waypoint to your forward vills, your TC wagon will go there automatically then (= less to micro)

• a second before you hit Colonial put 2 vill idle next to your TC where the crates pop out, so they start gathering the wood crates automatically once aged up.

Colonial:

• do this very! fast, withing 3 sec. Build a rax with your forward vills, send 700 wood and 600 wood (you should have nearly 2 cards once you age up)

• make the TC wagon (which is already on the way) build at your fb

• start building a second rax and 2 houses

• TC waypoints on food.

• start making xbows as soon as the raxes are up (don't wait till both are up, start producing right away)

• set Shipment point to your forward TC

• start harassing with your first 5 xbows, use your explorer eye glass to look for vills

• keep running with your xbow mass to his hunts, try shooting a vill, and run away asap again. You don't want to fight properly, just make him garrison his vill

• once both wood crates are shipped move 8 vills on wood.

• send 8 xbows next, to your forward TC

• you will have 40 xbows at 6:00

• you should have constant vill production from both TCs doing this. It's better to have 1 xbow less, but waste no idle TC time. Eat livestock whenever you can.

Once 8 xbows are shipped, I send my food crates, just put more vills on wood, a few on gold, get a market up and start upgrading your economy. The food crates will help you TC booming, and will make sure you can keep both raxes pumping. If you don't want to follow a colonial agenda, you can simply send 700 gold after the 8 xbows, and go fortress. It's up to you.

Pros:

• very versatile, pike/xbow is a strong combo when used correctly

• suprise: no one expects ports to have such a huge early mass. Many do an eco orientated BO vs ports, they will be screwed.

• grabs map control (you can hunt screw the opponent if you herd his hunts to your forward TC)

Negs:

• neglects economy to a certain extent, as you aren't sending eco theory as first card, and you might have 20 sec idle TC time in discovery

• might lose to a straight FF
